time management

NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2011 Energy & Time

School has been back in session, the weather has turned again. The northern hemisphere is feeling the cold. The southern hemisphere is feeling the heat. Managing your time can feel very difficult and frustrating in extreme weather. Rather than thoughts of time management, let’s see how to budget our energy so that our time feels more productive.

In fact, when we talk of “time management”, these days do we actually mean ‘energy management’? We all have 24 hours per day. The question is: how do we use them? Are we doing things that other people require of us? If we earn our living, then often (not always) the answer is yes. What else do we do? We do family things, household things……

Everything we do takes time and energy. How can we invest our time that would give us additional energy and thus make time more enjoyable for us? When we are feeling good and productive, our energy levels increase. Our productivity makes us feel as though we are spending time wisely.

Monthly Tip

What one thing can you do over the next month that makes you feel positive, something YOU want to do, that gives you energy? Give yourself the time for this activity and see what a difference this makes to your sense of wellbeing and time management. Do it in small increments, to a kitchen timer, or take a few hours! The important thing is that you WANT to do it!

transitions

The season will change again at the end of the month. Is anything else changing for you? Do you start a new job? Do you know someone starting at a new school? Will you start a new exercise program? I love change, but not everyone does. Think of just one positive thing about the change- will that help you cope?

bust stress

I realize that not everyone loves the heat. But I do, so a wonderful walk by canals this weekend was great for relaxing, having fun and busting stress. No loud noise, no phones, no business talk, no diaries. Refreshing- and as my last month's (yes, it is now August!) newsletter suggested, I was able to delete a number of emails and get to the serious stuff. Nothing bad happened because I let go for a few days! Why don't you try it.

humour

Well, some days have been nicer than others this summer. Hopefully your internal rhythm is enjoying the nice days. Take at least a short break. Lighten yourself up- your sense of humour. Find something within yourself to make you laugh. Spend some time not taking yourself so seriously!

NEWSLETTER JULY 2011 ENJOY!!

It is summer in the northern hemisphere (sorry, I know it is winter down under) and hot. When it gets hot, many of us feel the need to remove layers: physical and maybe emotional. Now is the ideal time to release some stress.

What will happen if you let it all go for a weekend, a week, two weeks? Do your muscles clench at the thought of taking time off? Yes, I know it is not at the thought of being gone, but at what will wait for you upon your return- to work, finances, diet. You feel that everything will be more overwhelming. Your emails will pile up, your mail will go unread and bills unpaid. You will gain/lose too much weight.

Are you sure that is true? Will all that email be necessary, or can you delete most of it immediately? Are you sure that the few pounds/kilos you gain or lose will ruin your life?

Monthly Tip

Take three days to just enjoy not doing. What is one aspect (only one) of life that keeps you very stressed. Can you release it for only three days, roughly the length of a long weekend? What is the worst that can happen? Alternatively, what is the best that might happen?

Goals May 2011

Once again, let’s talk about achieving goals.

What do you wish to achieve and how do you do so? As we know, different methods work for different people. One time we discussed breaking your project down into small steps. We also discussed setting a kitchen timer for a fifteen minute interval. This time let’s try another method of achieving: visualizing and counting backwards.

How should your end result look? What does your project look like- to you- when it is complete? For example, what does your desk top look like when it is perfect for you? How does your kitchen cabinet have to look to satisfy your needs? What does the report look like when it has been completed and then submitted? Are you able to visualize any of this? How did you make it all happen? Can you count back the final 2-3 steps you took to accomplish it all? And, to get to those steps, what others did you have to make? What actions, and how long did each take you to reach this state of ‘done’?

Monthly Tip

Pick one area of office, house or mind, be it a place or an action and contemplate what you would consider needed to make it perfect for you. Think about the above discussion. Can you make it work for you? Good luck, and let me know what happens.
